Our Story

In 2008, in response to changing environmental conditions and our desire to evaluate new varieties, we began to establish additional vineyard areas at Mount Mary. We chose seven varieties that have been traditionally grown in the Rhone Valley of France with the vision to continue to explore the potential of our unique site, creating some new and exciting wines.

THE WINES - RP1

Our RP1 is a white blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Clairette. We have adopted a similar approach to the way we make our other white wines at Mount Mary, with barrel fermenting, lees stirring and relatively hard pressing giving this wine great texture and depth of flavour.

This wine is very much set in a leaner, lighter framework than what is typical of these varieties when traditionally grown in warmer regions. We choose to pick these varieties relatively early to avoid excessive viscosity which, can occur when these varieties are grown in warmer climates and picked riper. These varieties were initially intended for blending with the other 7 varieties planted however, we decided they had too much potential as a stand-alone white blend. The Clairette made it’s debut in the 2016 release which contributes to an improved, more complex blend.

THE WINES - RP2

Our RP2 blend includes all four red varieties from our Marli Russell plantings being Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Cinsault.

This wine is matured in larger format oak barrels to preserve freshness, fruit vibrancy and energy. In 2015 the Mourvedre was added followed by the Cinsault in 2016 which has added an interesting dimension to an improved, more complex blend. It is a slightly more fruit forward, earlier drinking style than other Mount Mary red wines, with the depth and palate weight sitting somewhere between the Quintet and Pinot noir.

It was always the intent for this blend to be Grenache dominant (at least 50%) and now having worked with these varieties in the vineyard for 10 years we are convinced more than ever that this is such an important aspect. We truly love the way Grenache grows on our site and it is this variety we hope dictates the wine’s style. A wine of elegance, with beautiful mid palate fruit sweetness combined with savoury attributes and fine grain tannin.

Events

Marli Russell events are held annually at various locations. They are a great way to enjoy these wines with family and friends within a relaxed and casual atmosphere as well as providing the opportunity chat to the team about the vines, the site and how the wines are made. Place your order now to join the Marli Russell mailing list or register an enquiry for more information.
